I am still very tired but there is no time for another wink; i promised to pick up two judoka. Fortunately, most of the things are ready yet. Yesterday we filled the luggage van with all sorts of goodies, we will be fine.  So, I jump in the chower, brush my teeth and attempt to shave myself.. oops, it is already 0600, and i must be in Amsterdam-North at 0615! A big swig of coffee before waking and with my sandwich in hand i jump in the car and race Northward. It is good to drive in the early morning, it is quiet on the road and no speed traps. At 0620 i am at the door of judoka 1, who whisks me through a quick shortcut towards judoka 2. Never thought to drive like this, and almost on time. All other judoka were present at the Alphons and we drove to Den Helder reasonably on time. It is always difficult to put them through checkin all at the same time. Brought by the little bus but otherwise pretty self-sufficient. First, he drinks some coffee and chats with Wil and the other judoka. This is what he does for the last 40 years and nothing changed since. Well, of course the location changed a couple of times. The last move was not very pleasant, we had to move from a day-care centre for the elderly and the club ran there for 25 years. The judo club was almost a part of the day-care centre, and everything was possible. Many a foreign judoka slept on our tatami, so they could compete the next day in the largest tournament in The Netherlands, first in Amstelveen, later in Beverwijk, and he himself slept on the mat many a time. For example, when we had to go to a tournament abroad with a touringcar, and we had to leave at 06:00 in the morning. In Amsterdam, public transport doesn't go that early therefore the boys and girls went to the daycare centre to be in time for the bus. In the morning there will be a normal individual competition for youth and seniors. ( with a maximum of 250 competitors) In afternoon however there will be a team competition but only for level 1 and 2 judokas born 1995 and earlier. (with a maximum of 8 teams) This event is one of the top three high-quality judo events in the Netherlands. Criteria here are the dedication shown and the persistence of the candidate. Every judoka, in every country, club or level may be nominated for the Special Needs Judo Award. The Special Needs Judo Foundation's Board will then judge which judoka complies most with the criteria mentioned.  The Special Needs Judo Foundation wants to offer opportunities to talented judoka that are not yet at the top of their class but excel in their dedication, and whose story has a substantial emotional value.   The first Special Needs Judo award is a young judoka, chosen after long deliberation. For the first time in history, the Dutch Judo Association has sanctioned this tournament as one of the official Dutch Championships. The tournament received some international attention in the participation of the German and British selections.   The Dutch Open Championships were opened by the deputy mayor of the City of Bunnik, Mr. Eijbersen, who started the proceedings by throwing one of the judoka on the mat.   56 judoka competed for the medals. Dependant on the number of competitors in the pool, this was done in a pool system or in a knock-out system. At the end of the day, The Netherlands received seven golden medals. After a few weeks he said he would like to talk to me, so he made an appointment. During this meeting he explained to me that he was suffering from terrible disease called MS and wanted some advice from me. People who know me understand why, I have also a chronicle deceased called Parkinson. Danny wanted to know all kinds of things, like how to continue to work and what to do if this was not possible anymore. How my wife and kids have respond to my disease and how to deal with it. But above all he wanted to know how to stay healthy, because he had heard that it was 10 years ago that I was confronted with this conical disease. He was wondering how I managed to stay apparently to be so physical fit, I told him that it is not going to be easy for the future, of course MS is a different disease than Parkinson. In 2004 Tomo and Darij organized a very well prepared Special Needs Judo event in Koper, a city nearby the wonderful coast of Slovenia. I remember a well organized tournament, to have seen the caves of Postonia, been on a boot trip and enjoyed the BBQ with a farewell party. But above all the kindness and the hospitality of the Slovenian people was more than appreciated. For the World Summer Games judo event in Athens 2011 there should be a number of local, licensed SN-Judo officials and referees available. In Greece however there is not too much knowledge and experience with SN judo. Judo Bond Netherlands saw the request of the International Special Olympics organization as a great sign of recognition and appreciation in relation to the level and content of the Dutch SN activities. First of all in Japan there's a totally different treatment of the children than in which other country in the world. The Japanese culture is all about being the best because when you the best you become a leader of a group. Japanese people live in groups with a strong hierarchic structure. When you studied in Japanese history you can see that the culture is built around the best warriors. The mean of four deaths per year is significantly higher than in any other school sport.　Note that these figures do not include deaths from accidents outside school such as in private judo clubs, so the total number of deaths in young people is higher still. Inimitable techniques, the opponents of Koga knew he pitched them with Ippon-Seoi-nage, but they didn’t know when, were and how he dropped them on their back, they only faired him. The same for Tani the way she dominated her weight class for more than a decade is beyond impressiveness.   We are in the impression that judo is for granted the first sport activity in Japan, but this is not true. In fact there are relatively more judokas active in the Netherlands then in Japan. Roughly in Japan one of 700 people is practicing judo while in the Netherlands this number is one of  300 people. Sometime it is hard to deal with these extra medical aspects, but they are a fact of live. In fact judokas with a disability need more care than judokas in main stream judo, and is in general underestimating. Especially people who don’t guide special needs judokas are often not aware which preparations must be made to train or compete with special needs judokas. What does it mean when you learn the art of judo to a person with Spina Bifida with Hydrocephalus. The National Youth Award is an annual price awarded by the Dutch Youth Institute which is the expertise centre for youth and parenting issues controlled by the government. The Dutch Judo Federation was nominated out of 79 accepted projects in the Netherlands. It year the overall theme of professional working was the centre of the judgment. Beside the common social relevance, quality, effectiveness, usability and innovation the panel of judge’s criteria were the professional structure of the project. The Dutch Judo Federation didn’t sent in the whole Special Needs project but only the social inclusion part which is linked to social disadvantage youth. Again we succeed to run a 2 days event successfully, including 300 competitors, 51 special needs judo teachers who followed the application schooling and 35 new special needs judo referees. Including 15 Greece referees who were selected by Special Olympics to judge by the World Summer Games in Athens 2011. Also for the judoka’s we had an interesting program whit clinics by top judoka’s and a real knight festival in the castle were they stay overnight. By joining the clinics of the Special Needs Judokas, the participants of the seminar will meet and greet the peer group. For some of the students it will be their first acquaintance with Special Needs Judokas. The organizers are sure that this will be a thrill for life, because the majority of SN Judokas are captivating and open for all. After lunch, the students will be divided in three groups. Each group will be following three lectures of 15 minutes. As referees and officials in the World Summer Games judo event there should be a number of local, licensed SN-Judo officials and referees available.  In Greece however there is not too much knowledge and experience with SN judo.
